Here Comes the Real News

The Cindy Sheehan story reached its official terminus a few hours ago.

I remember Krugman saying Enron would be a bigger story than Sept. 11. Enron is going to be a footnote compared to Hurricane Katrina.

  1. I can’t imagine how you rank story importance that puts katrina above enron which is above 9/11.

9/11- two wars, hundreds of billions of dollars spent, thousands and thousands of deaths

Enron- millions of dollars stolen, thousands of lives ruined

Katrina- two people dead so far, oil over $70 a barrel

  2. Well, that post was based on the then-current estimate that New Orleans was perhaps going to be destroyed. So, I think that would be quite a bit more important than Enron.

  3. “millions of dollars stolen, thousands of lives ruined.” Enron? Is that Spanish for Aid to Families With Dependent Children?

  4. I have no idea what you mean by that. Are you disputing that Enron execs stole millions of dollars? Or that their thousands of employees who lost their retirements faced, if not life ruining, at least highly difficult times due to Enron’s unbelievable corruption?

  5. It’s worth pointing out that since my original post the storm damage has greatly increased so that I’d conceed that it’s probably a bigger story than Enron (although still not 9/11).

  6. T, I never contended it was bigger than 9-11, just that Krugman said Enron was bigger than 9-11.

My point was that the big hurricane would be much bigger than Enron and that Krugman would look dumber than ever for having made Enron the defining story of a century.
